On 18th August 2026, the school had the privilege of hosting a captivating Kathak performance organised by SPIC MACAY, featuring the renowned Kathak exponent Pandit Vishal Krishna Ji, an illustrious 11th-generation artiste of the legendary Banaras Gharana, he was nurtured under the loving guidance of his grandmother, the legendary Kathak queen, Shrimati Sitara Devi Ji. The performance provided students with a wonderful opportunity to experience the richness, grace, rhythm, and storytelling tradition of Indian classical dance.
Shri Vishal Krishna Ji was accompanied by an accomplished ensemble of musicians—Shri Anand Mishra Ji on Tabla, Ustad Gulam Waris Ji on Sarangi, and Shri Jayawardhan Dadich Ji on Harmonium and vocals. The harmonious collaboration between dance and music created an immersive and enriching experience for the audience.
The program commenced with a soulful Ganesh Vandana, composed by the legendary Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj Ji. The graceful movements, intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and rhythmic patterns immediately captivated the students. This was followed by a series of Kathak presentations showcasing various aspects of the classical dance form. He also explained the nuances and significance of the pieces, enabling the students to understand the artistic vocabulary and traditions of Kathak more deeply.
The performance beautifully demonstrated the three important dimensions of Kathak—rhythm, expression, and storytelling. The artistes’ exceptional synchronisation and command over their respective art forms left the students mesmerised and offered them a glimpse into the discipline and dedication required to master Indian classical arts.
A particularly engaging part of the program was the interactive session between the students and Pandit Vishal Krishna Ji. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Kathak, the Banaras Gharana, the journey of a classical artiste, and the importance of preserving India’s rich cultural heritage. The interaction made the experience more meaningful and encouraged students to develop a deeper appreciation for Indian classical traditions.
The event was a memorable celebration of Indian classical dance and music, inspiring students to appreciate, respect, and connect with the country’s rich cultural heritage.
