Debate is the fire that tempers the steel of ideas and quiz is not just a test of memory, but a celebration of curiosity, where every question is an invitation to explore the vastness of knowledge.29th Padmashri JTM Gibson, OBE Memorial Invitational Debates and Quiz was organized by Mayo College, Ajmer from 4th to 6th October 2024, featuring participants from various schools from across the globe, where each team comprised five participants. The events aimed to foster critical thinking, public speaking and confidence in participants and gave them an opportunity to learn, grow and enhance their skills.
The event unfolded in two stages namely the Quiz Competition and the Asian Parliamentary Debate. The Quiz team comprised Prathna Sancheti and Niharika Champawat whereas the debate team consisted of three members - Eshal Bindra, Suhani Lodha and Adwitiya Saxena. The team was escorted by Ms Neetu Chatterjee.
The Quiz was an engaging and intellectually stimulating activity that challenged participants' knowledge across a variety of subjects, from general facts to specialized areas like Science, History and Current Affairs. It sharpened the minds, promoted quick thinking and fostered a spirit of curiosity and learning. The Quiz was moderated proficiently by Mr. Ajay Poonia.
The Quiz was a grand success with participants and audience alike leaving with fond memories and a renewed enthusiasm for learning. Beyond being a fun and interactive experience, the Quiz encouraged a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, making it both an educational and enjoyable endeavour.
The second day began with the Debating Rounds. The debates inculcated an exchange of ideas, where logic, persuasion and critical thinking converged to create a meaningful dialogue. It was not merely a contest of opposing views but an intellectual exercise that refined arguments, fostered open-mindedness, and encouraged respectful discourse. Throughout the debate, individuals learned to articulate their thoughts clearly, challenge assumptions, and consider multiple perspectives, making it a powerful tool for personal growth and societal progress.
The debate consisted of 16 teams and three preliminary rounds out of which 8 best schools qualified for the Quarter Finals. A distinguished panel of judges from the ‘Awaaz’ Group evaluated the debaters on various criteria such as content, delivery, rebuttal strength, and overall impact.
The format followed was Asian Parliamentary allowing both sides ample time to present their arguments, followed by rebuttals and counter arguments. The competition witnessed several standout performances. Both the Government and the opposition delivered compelling arguments, impressing both the audience and judges. The topics were absolutely well crafted and some of the motion that were debated upon were, “As a middle class parent, this house would adopt free range parenting” and “This house believes that celebrities should not be allowed political advocacy”.
The competitions were a resounding success, providing a platform for young minds to express their thoughts on critical issues. They event not only showcased the intellectual prowess of the participants but also emphasized the importance of dialogue and discussion in shaping informed opinions. It fostered a spirit of healthy competition and intellectual curiosity, leaving both participants and spectators enriched.
