DANCE DEMOSTRATION WORKSHOP BY SPIC MACAY CONDUCTED BY MS SOHINI DEBNATH

“An artist evolves through many experiences which enhances and shapes her creative journey. A part of this journey is very internal and individualistic but it is only complete through sharing and collaboration.”

Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls’ Public School organized a Dance demonstration workshop for the boarders in collaboration with Spic Macay on 10th September 2022. The workshop was taken by Ms Sohini Debnath, a renowned Kathak dancer and currently the Director of Samskritiki Shreyaskar, her Guru Rani Karnaa’s Kathak Academy in Kolkata.

She is the proud recipient of the National Scholarship for Dance from the Govt. of India and is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations; ICCR, New Delhi and Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. The Kathak artist was accompanied by her vocal and instrumental team members: Mr Subrata Manna on Tabla, Ms Sudokshina Manna on Vocals and Mr Sunando Mukherjee on Sarod.

The workshop began with the lamp lightning and blessing of Goddess Saraswati. Ms Sohini introduced herself and the team with the reflections they had to offer about her journey, performances and experiences throughout the world. The artist presented varied forms of foot work that works on the mathematical permutation and combination of the beats, rhythm and synchronization of the instruments with the dancers. The students were spellbound and amazed with the energy and grace she moved with. She also mentioned that to create such a amazing piece it takes a live performance and not a recording studio. Ms Sohini also presented some pieces based on the enactment of stories related to Lord Krishna which students particularly enjoyed.

The demonstration workshop ended with a great applause and cheer from the students for all the artists. The students were motivated and inspired with the knowledge and experiences that she shared with them.
