ST CYPRIAN’S SCHOOL, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA (RS ZOOM POSTCARD)

To know the true reality of yourself, you must be aware not only of your conscious thoughts, but also of your unconscious prejudices, bias and habits.

On 16th February 2022, a memorable RS Zoom Postcard was organised by St Cyprian’s School, Cape Town, South Africa. This event was 90 minutes long and was held on Zoom. In this mega event, many schools from all over the world took part. A team of 6 students comprising - Bhavi Kumbhat, Surbhi Udawat, Sonali Kanwar, Kritika Gill, Gunraj Singh Chouhan and Doyal Khandelwal with their Teacher Incharge Ms Mukta Singh represented RKK. The theme of the conference was “Understanding Unconscious Bias”. The postcard call was very insightful and informative. Students were given a pre – conference task and asked to prepare a postcard on the theme.

The Keynote Speaker highlighted the points that unconscious bias is our brain’s way of creating shortcuts to make sense of the world. However, these shortcuts are often based on incomplete or untrue information. The event started with the host asking some questions, like - ‘How has unconscious bias affected you in a negative way’? ‘Do you believe unconscious bias can be a good thing and if yes, then how’? ‘Have you ever been stereotyped and how does it feel’? Later, students were divided into breakout rooms where they had a very interactive discussion on the topic. There was an amazing and enriching Barraza session where all the participants shared their views and gained an impressive learning experience. Participation with full zeal and enthusiasm gave them a bag full of knowledge. The students really enjoyed a lot and dispersed with a sincere hope that such events organised time and again would be giving the students a chance to learn.
