CAREER IN FASHION INDUSTRY BY DEVSHREE HADA

On 17 September, a workshop on "Careers in the Fashion Industry" was conducted in the New Library for students of classes XI and XII. The session was led by Devshree Hada, an alumnus from the 2019 batch of RKK, and a passionate model deeply engaged in the fashion world. Devshree shared her journey, highlighting how self-belief and maintaining honest, transparent communication with her parents played a pivotal role in her success. She emphasized that confidence is a critical asset in the highly competitive and ever-evolving fashion industry. One of her most impactful statements, "You can understand fashion only if you are FASHION," struck a chord with the audience. It conveyed that fashion is not merely about wearing clothes but is about embodying a distinct attitude and lifestyle.

During the session, Devshree offered valuable insights into the different types of modelling careers available, such as runway, editorial, commercial, and fitness modelling. She explained that each category has its unique requirements and opportunities, and encouraged aspiring models to explore their strengths in these areas. To guide students interested in stepping into the world of modelling, she suggested several entry points like joining a modelling agency, participating in pageantry, or freelancing by building a strong portfolio.

Devshree also took time to dispel some common myths about working in the fashion industry. She tackled misconceptions like the need to always wear makeup, emphasizing that fashion celebrates individuality and personal expression rather than conforming to a single look. She also rejected the notion that one has to compromise personal values or dignity to succeed in modelling. Devshree addressed the stereotype that models must undergo cosmetic surgeries to fit unrealistic beauty standards and debunked the belief that only tall, young, and skinny individuals could succeed. In today’s fashion world, diversity and inclusivity are increasingly embraced. Furthermore, she clarified that being popular is not a prerequisite for success in modelling, as talent, hard work, and perseverance matter more than fame. Her powerful quote, "Modelling is not about sacrificing dignity but about building yourself," reinforced the idea that the industry should be about self-development and empowerment, not about losing oneself to external pressures.

While outlining the pros of working in the fashion industry, Devshree spoke about the opportunities for travel, which often allow models to visit new and exciting places. She also mentioned perks like access to premium beauty products and the flexibility in work schedules that many models enjoy. However, she didn’t shy away from discussing the challenges as well. Devshree candidly shared that the industry often demands long and unpredictable hours, making it difficult to maintain a work-life balance. She also warned about the risks of falling into scams, as fraudulent agencies often target aspiring models. Moreover, she highlighted the constant pressure that models face to maintain a certain image, which can be emotionally and mentally exhausting as they are always in the spotlight.

In her conclusion, Devshree offered a heartfelt acknowledgement of the teachers at Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls' Public School, praising them as some of the best mentors she has ever had. She contrasted this with her experiences in the fashion industry, where mentorship can be impersonal and less caring. Her final remark about the teachers at RKK being a rare source of support and guidance left the students feeling fortunate for the nurturing environment they have at their school.

The workshop provided an honest and balanced view of the fashion industry, inspiring the students to pursue their dreams with confidence while staying grounded in their values. Devshree’s candid advice and personal experiences offered a realistic perspective on the glamour and challenges of a career in fashion.
