The Emerald Heights International School, Indore hosted the Round Square Conference, from 3rd to 7th January 2024 which was a remarkable event bringing together students, educators, and leaders globally. Aligned with the Round Square IDEALS of Environmental Stewardship coupled with the theme of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the conference promised dynamic collaboration, cross cultural exchange, and a shared commitment to global citizenship. There were total 19 schools participating in this conference such as YPS, PPS, DAIS, Daly College, Sunbeam School Lahartara, Pathways World School, Vivek High School to name a few.

RKK’s delegation comprising six students - Adhya Dudi, Bhavika Jalani, Aaditri Bhatacherjee, Naisha Salecha, Tamanna Bhawnani, Avika Sancheti and escort teacher, Perminder Meena Ma’am had a golden opportunity to attend this Round Square Conference. The conference held under the theme VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBKAM, aimed to explore the concept of the world as one family. This report provides an overview of the conference proceedings and the impact of the theme on the participants.

The conference commenced with a captivating Opening Ceremony, setting the tone for the entire event. It featured spectacular flag bearing ceremony followed by enlightening key note address by distinguished speaker, Mr. Bhalu Mondhe. He delivered an insightful speech on nature and sustainability.

The next key note address was by an avid bird enthusiast, Mr. Dev Kumar Vasudevan. His inspiring speech emphasized the importance of environmental conservation and highlighted the unique role that birds play in maintaining ecological balance.

Delegates were organized into Barazza Groups, each named after a national park in Madhya Pradesh like Kanha, Gir, Jim Corbett, Kaziranga etc. This innovative approach fostered a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among participants. The groups engaged in various activities and discussions centred around the theme of environmental conservation. This gave an understanding of sustainability for a better tomorrow.

A highlight of the conference was the visit to SIRPUR LAKE – A WETLAND PARADISE, where delegates had the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the region.  

In line with the theme, delegates engaged in community service that aimed to make positive impact on the local community. In this category, delegates visited Kripalaya - old age home, an education centre Gyanodya - for underprivileged children, deaf and bilingual academy, an educational centre Sanjeevani –for underprivileged deaf and mute children, Mahesh Drishtiheen – a school dedicated to blind and partially blind girls. In community service the delegates accomplished many activities like – bed sheet painting, bottle painting, wall painting, block painting, poster making and ladoo making.

The next learning experience came from the MANDU EXPLORATION. All the delegates explored the historical town of Mandu. This excursion provided a glimpse into India's rich heritage and allowed participants to appreciate the architectural marvels, history and cultural diversity of Mandu, that has a fascinating past, dating back to the 6th century. Nestled amidst the Vindhya Range, the city is home to a plethora of architectural wonders, reflecting the grandeur of its medieval rulers.

The delegates visited many historical sites at Mandu like, Rani Rupmati's Pavilion, Baz Bahadur Palace, Jahaz Mahal, Jami Masjid and Hoshang Shah's Tomb

The conference concluded with a vibrant Closing Ceremony, featuring cultural performances from all the participating schools. Delegates showcased their talents through dance, music, and drama, celebrating "Vasudev Kutumbhkam," that defined the Round Square conference. It was a resounding success, fostering global connections and promoting a deeper understanding of the world. The diverse range of activities, insightful speakers, and cultural exchanges made it a memorable and enriching experience for all participants.

Our biggest takeaways from this conference are:

1. Exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives, foster a broader understanding of the global community.

2. Engagement in group activities and discussions, promote teamwork and leadership skills.

3. Insights from keynote speakers on the importance of environmental conservation, particularly in relation to bird life added to our learning.

4. Participation in Barazza Groups based on national parks, fostered a sense of community and teamwork.

5. Trips to Sirpur Lake and Mandu, offered practical knowledge about ecosystems, wetlands, and historical landmarks.

6. Exploration of historical sites like Mandu, provided a first-hand experience of India's rich cultural heritage.

7. Interaction with mentors and fellow delegates, established connections for potential future collaborations.

8. Practical application of knowledge gained during workshops, discussions, and visits to real-world scenarios.

9. Recognition and celebration of diversity as a strength, promoted inclusion and understanding.

10. Exposure to new experiences, challenges, and environments contributed to personal growth and cultural performances during the Closing Ceremony provided inspiration and appreciation for diverse artistic expressions.
