Preserving Grace, Performing Legacy: Pravat Kumar Swain and the Global Journey of Odissi
On the 26th of April, 2025 a captivating Odissi dance performance was held at RKK in the BRS Auditorium, showcasing the exquisite artistry of Pravat Kumar Swain, a renowned Odissi dancer, choreographer, and teacher. The performance was a testament to Swain’s dedication to the classical dance form, and his journey from a Gotipua dancer to a refined Odissi exponent under the tutelage of Guru Aruna Mohanty at the Orissa Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar.
Currently pursuing a PhD in Odissi Dance at Utkal University of Culture, Pravat Kumar Swain has been the recipient of several prestigious accolades, including the Ustaad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2020, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Yuva Puraskar, and both national senior and junior scholarships. His performances have earned widespread acclaim both in India and internationally.
A significant highlight of his career was his two-year tenure (2022–2024) as a teacher and performer at the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), Bali, under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). His international engagement reflects his commitment to taking Odissi to global audiences.
In 2013, Pravat founded Nrutya Naivedya, an institute aimed at promoting and preserving the rich heritage of Odissi dance and music. The institute has become a premier cultural organization in Odisha, known for nurturing talents and staging remarkable performances across the globe.
During the performance, Nrutya Naivedya’s artists presented a series of traditional and innovative Odissi compositions. Their presentation on stage was marked by precision, grace, and deep devotion to the art form. The audience was left mesmerized by the aesthetic and spiritual richness of Odissi, and the dedication of the performers.
The compatability of Rhythm, Music, Song and Dance was made so easy by Mr Swain. He taught children the art of rhythm and in no time children started enjoying with full zeal.
The event was not only an artistic treat but also a reaffirmation of the timeless elegance and cultural importance of Odissi dance. Pravat Kumar Swain’s work through Nrutya Naivedya is playing a vital role in keeping the flame of this classical tradition alive and glowing on the global stage.
The show was a live example of how EAST MEETS WEST WITH GRACE.
