INTER STATE, INTER REGION, INTER SCHOOL AND INTER CLASS CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME – SENDING

SUNBEAM SCHOOL, VARUNA

“Fill your life with experiences. Not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.”~
 OSCAR WILDE.

The first experience we had when we got out of the train to enter Varanasi, as a team of 12 students, was the tropical, wet, hot air that permeated the environment. We arrived at Sunbeam school’s hostel and were accorded warm welcome by the Sunbeamians. Beauty seemed to be all around us. We decided to spend our first day in our rooms to take some rest from a tiresome trip. The weather was wonderful. We went for evening Ganga Aarti performed at the Dashashwamedh Ghat that we witnessed from the  waterside in a boat. It was a beautiful, resonant and majestic spectacle with a very precise choreography involving rituals performed by several priests with the sound of bells, drums, cymbals, and Sanskrit mantras.  Boating in the Ganges at sunrise in Varanasi was also one of the experiences where we observed Hindu way of life.

Some of the prominent and popular Ghats we witnessed at Varanasi were the Dashaswamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat and Assi Ghat. After the boat ride, we took a small walk in to the oldest part of Varanasi, famous for its narrow streets. We also had a drive to Sarnath, approximately 10 km from Varanasi City. The days were changing from one to another with new, bright, unforgettable emotions and impressions. The interaction with the students and teachers of the Sunbeam school was an icing on the cake.

All the way long, we made breaks to taste the delicacies of the local cuisine in snack bars. We enjoyed Tomato chat, Gol gappas, Lassi and even the kachori and jalebis immensely with its extraordinary combination of sweet, sour and spicy flavours. The picturesque view of Banaras Hindu University, the Indian Art Museum, Bharat Kala Bhawan, New Kashi Vishwnath Temple and the beauty and splendour of local nature was opened to us. We were overwhelmed with the sense of infinite freedom and peace of mind. There was an impression that nothing is necessary in life except this place and moment. Other important points to visit in city included the Durga Temple, Sarnath, Lahartara, Bharat Mata Temple and Kabir Math.

It was a truly sad realization when we knew we had to travel back home. The whirlwind of emotions and feelings swept over our minds. This was completely another world, with its climate, people, food, traditions and customs that dipped us in the extraordinary atmosphere of calmness and composure. We cherish the memories now with freshness and understand that it was the best journey of our life.
